What is Tung Oil?

Tung oil, also known as China wood oil, is extracted from the nut of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii). It is highly regarded in the woodworking world for its ability to penetrate deeply into the wood and harden upon exposure to air (a process known as polymerization). This oil is often used in its pure form but can also be found in various modified formulas.

Effects on Wood

1. Penetration and Protection: Tung oil penetrates deeply into the pores of the wood, providing a protective layer that enhances the wood's resistance to water and other elements. This penetration also helps in stabilizing the wood, reducing the likelihood of warping or cracking.

Application and Maintenance

• Drying Time: Tung oil takes longer to dry compared to some other finishes. Good ventilation and patience are key.
• Maintenance: Maintenance of tung-oiled wood is relatively simple. Reapplication of the oil can rejuvenate the finish and protect the wood.
